Equality, Diversity & Inclusion in Research

Our Strategies

To understand and tackle health inequalities and structural inequalities in the determinants of health and well-being, the Bapio Institute aims to build strong patient and public partnerships for co-producing interventions that address these disparities. We seek to create a network of researchers committed to diversity, equity in healthcare, and justice. Our goal is to provide a platform that supports research strategies and innovation from under-represented communities, ultimately generating resources to support research and innovation for justice and equality in patient care.

Our outreach activities in preventing discrimination has been active since 2010

BIHR's Exclusive Research Areas

The Bapio Institute for Health Research (BIHR) will develop research strategies by actively engaging with its members and collaborators to set research priorities that address contemporary and relevant themes, specifically targeting equity in healthcare and health inequalities. It will support a research-engaged workforce that collaborates to create culturally sensitive solutions, ensuring that high-quality healthcare is accessible to all, while promoting diversity in care.

BIHR will support widespread dissemination of its research output via publication in the Bapio Institute’s policy journal ‘Sushruta’ and health journal ‘The Physician’, following rigorous peer review. Additionally, publication in other journals and media outlets will be encouraged to address issues of diversity and equity in healthcare.

BIHR will arrange periodic, facilitated engagement events to distil research strategies that are most relevant to its members and tackle health inequalities. It will also facilitate collaboration with other research organisations, tapping into a wealth of expertise for impactful research.

Themes central to the Bapio Institute's membership interests, such as addressing health inequalities through differential attainment among healthcare workers in the NHS, promoting diversity in leadership to enhance equity in healthcare, and supporting vulnerable staff members to achieve their maximum potential in meeting the nation's health needs, will be developed through targeted research strategies. Grant applications and research design will be actively supported.
